CuTex Copper Composite Root Barrier
CuTex is a permeable geocomposite root barrier system consisting of a specially formulated copper sheet mechanically encapsulated between two high-strength geotextiles. CuTex works by safely releasing Cu²⁺ ions to inhibit root growth.
The copper ions create a localized zone of inhibition. When root tips approach this zone they undergo a progressive collapse — the dividing cells at the very tip of the root (the meristem) die off while the cells above differentiate. The copper acts as a signal layer that plants avert their growth from. CuTex releases only minute quantities of copper ion, making it a safe yet highly effective root-blocking material that functions as both a physical and a chemical barrier.
- Model: CU-3.9X100
- Construction: copper sheet encapsulated between woven and high-strength nonwoven polypropylene geotextiles
- Action: dual physical + chemical (Cu²⁺ ion) root deterrence
- Permeable: allows water and nutrients to pass through — no pooling or waterlogging
- Herbicide-free and safe for surrounding wildlife and groundwater
CuTex provides direct protection from invasive weeds and plants — particularly the risk posed by Japanese Knotweed to infrastructure and foundations across construction, highways, rail, and water industries. It was independently assessed as effective against Japanese knotweed by the Centre for Plant Sciences, University of Leeds, UK.
