29" Permeable Root Barrier — Typar BioBarrier

The 29" Typar BioBarrier is a permeable root control fabric that redirects invasive roots while still allowing water, air, and nutrients to pass through the soil.

The fabric's bonded nodules slowly release trifluralin — a non-systemic herbicide safer than table salt by oral toxicity — establishing a “no root” zone that turns roots away without affecting overall plant health. The 29" height reaches deeper root systems, making it well suited to larger trees and more demanding protection of foundations, hardscapes, pipes, and utilities.

Each roll measures 29" x 100' and is set vertically in a trench, cutting to size and contouring to almost any installation geometry. Backed by a 15-year root-control guarantee.

Permeable Root Barrier — Typar BioBarrier

Permeable root barriers stop invasive roots while still letting water, air, and nutrients pass through the soil. Our Typar BioBarrier root control fabric uses time-release nodules to create a multi-year “no root” zone — guaranteed for 15 years — ideal for protecting foundations, sidewalks, and utilities without impacting overall plant health.

How BioBarrier Works

BioBarrier is a tough, porous geotextile fabric studded with permanently attached nodules. Each nodule holds trifluralin — a non-systemic herbicide that has been used in agriculture for decades and carries a lower oral toxicity than table salt.

The nodules release the trifluralin slowly, forming a narrow “no root” zone in the soil right around the fabric. Roots growing toward that zone are simply redirected away, while roots outside the zone keep growing normally. Because the herbicide isn't systemic, the surrounding trees and plants stay healthy.

Stops Roots Without Stopping Water

Unlike a solid plastic barrier, BioBarrier is fully permeable. Water, air, and nutrients pass straight through the geotextile, so soil hydrology around your trees and landscape is never disrupted — you get root control without creating a dam in the ground.

Why Choose BioBarrier
💧

Fully Permeable

Water, air, and nutrients pass through the geotextile, keeping soil hydrology intact.

🌱

Won't Harm Trees

Trifluralin is non-systemic, so it redirects roots without affecting overall plant health.

Flexible & Easy to Install

Cuts to size and contours to almost any layout — just set it in a trench and backfill.

Ideal Applications

BioBarrier suits nearly any situation where roots or weeds need to be kept out of a protected area: along sidewalks, driveways, and curbs; around building foundations, pipes, and utilities; near swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf courses; in gardens, cemeteries, levees, and dams; and in green-roof and planter applications. Install it when planting a new tree, or in a trench around existing trees and structures.

How to Install
  1. Excavate the trench. Excavate a trench along the perimeter of the area to be protected, positioned between the encroaching root mass and the structure or landscape. Trench depth should equal the fabric height so the barrier extends from finished grade to the base of the anticipated root zone.

  2. Sever existing roots. Prune and remove any existing roots encountered within the trench, cutting cleanly back to the protected side so no established root bridges the barrier plane.

  3. Position the geotextile. Deploy the BioBarrier vertically in the trench, oriented between the protected area and all root sources, with edges abutted or overlapped per the installation manual to maintain a continuous trifluralin zone. Wear gloves to avoid trifluralin contact, and keep the material sealed in its UV-protective bag until placement — premature sun exposure accelerates herbicide volatilization and shortens the effective 15-year service life.

  4. Backfill and compact. Backfill the trench in lifts, tamp to consolidate the soil against the fabric, and rake the surface to finished grade. Once backfilled, the nodules establish the root-inhibition zone and the system requires no further maintenance.
