Less Seams, More Secure

The weakest part of any root barrier is the seam. Panel-style barriers typically have seams every two feet which provides many opportunities for small tree roots to grow into and through the seams. As the roots mature they can expand and break the barrier. Our HDPE barrier ships in 100' rolls which allows you to install a 100' continuous barrier without vulnerable seams. Ultra-Thick Root Barrier Material

Our 80 mil HDPE barrier is thicker than two standard credit cards when stacked up. This level of thickness provides a very dependable and sturdy barrier able to deflect nearly any type of tree or bamboo root. Panel style barriers range from 40 mil to 80 mil in thickness depending on where exactly you measure. Because our HDPE barrier has a consistant thickness of 80 mil, your project is provided with a higher level of consistent protection.

Root Barriers: An Overview

Root barriers are necessary, they will prevent excessive moisture and protect trees from invasive roots. They also help to stop structural damage caused by offending roots. Root barriers are either linear or will surround the tree. These barriers are most effective when installed when you first plant a new tree. This will allow a new tree's roots to grow in the direction they are meant to.

Invasive Root Prevention

Tree root barriers are perfect for protecting your landscaping from invasive roots growing through. These barriers are made of a plastic material that will stop tree roots from getting in. Some of these barriers are made of a fabric material with a chemical embedded into the fabric which will release into the surrounding soil and prevent tree roots from growing for a period of about 15 years.

Tree roots can cause incredible damage to your home if left unattended. These roots can reach your foundation, plumbing, and landscaping. Always make sure your trees are planted at least ten feet away from your home's foundation.

Stop Excessive Moisture

The easiest way to stop tree roots from gaining access to your foundation is to install a plastic membrane vertical root barrier. These barriers are made of heavy-duty plastic sheeting that will stop roots from growing through the foundation. Also, to stop moisture loss from the ground, the root barrier membrane can stabilize reactive clay underneath your foundation. Not only are they easy to install but can be installed up to 48 inches below grade. One note, make sure to leave a three-inch space between the root ball and the barrier.

There are several different kinds of barriers to choose from. The simplest kind is the pre-manufactured barrier which happens to be the least expensive as well. This barrier is typically made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) that ranges from forty and to eighty mils thick. The thickness is very strong and impenetrable which will help stop excessive moisture from reaching your tree's roots.

Tree roots depend on a harmonious connection with soil microbes in order to survive. These microbes create white fungal threads known as mycelium that will spread out on top of the tree's roots and absorb sugars from them. In turn, they provide the tree with important minerals. This connection is often called a mycorrhizal network.

The tree's roots offer several essential functions for the tree including anchoring the tree in the soil while collecting water and nutrients. The roots can sense where water and nutrients are located and will move in that direction. Trees have a vascular structure that allows the roots to draw water and nutrients from the ground.

The Problem

Hydro Quebec owns and maintains one of the largest networks of transformer substations in North America. Standard maintenance of these facilities requires lengthy, costly shutdowns of the electrical equipment while workers get rid of vegetation that has accumulated around the equipment.

The company realized they needed a better solution to stop the growth of unwanted vegetation, save time, save money, and improve safety in the working environment.

The Solution

Hydro Quebec decided to go with BIOBARRIER Root Control Fabric to install in their 15,000 sq ft facility located in Shawinigan, Quebec. It took 6 hours to install while the crew cleared out vegetation and applied the BIOBARRIER membrane to the entire surface. After the material was unrolled and fit around obstructions, the area was covered with a three-inch layer of crushed stone.

The Benefits

The installation was effective by eliminating costly shutdowns for routine maintenance. It has been 2 years since installation and has not needed any maintenance and is still safe and free of vegetation.

Located in Alma, Quebec, BIOBARRIER Root Control System came to the rescue.

The Problem

Statistics have shown that each year there are approximately 6,000 collisions in Quebec involving cars and animals. Trying to stop these stats, and protect wildlife as well as drivers from future incidences, the Quebec Ministry of Transport installed electrified fences to keep animals away from the highway. Maintaining these fences can be very costly. Crews have to clear the vegetation from underneath miles of fencing several times each year.

The Solution

In 2009, the regional office of the Quebec Ministry of Transport invited DBB to come and participate in a multi-year demonstration of BIOBARRIER's ability to control vegetation growth around these electrical fences. The anticipated project began in June, 2009 on Highway 169.
