The Recommended Standard

Our 40 mil bamboo barrier is the most popular thickness in our rhizome control lineup, widely recognized as the baseline standard for effective bamboo containment.

At 3/64β€³ thick (1.19 mm), this HDPE rhizome barrier delivers a smooth, impenetrable surface that redirects bamboo rhizomes sideways instead of letting them spread through your yard, hardscapes, or neighboring plantings. Made in the USA and UV-stabilized, it’s built to last up to 100 years in the ground.

Bamboo earns its place with fast growth, year-round privacy, and striking good looks, but left uncontained that same vigor becomes a maintenance headache. Easy to cut and simple to join with HDPE seam tape, the 40 mil barrier suits most residential and commercial containment projects, from running bamboo to foundation and putting-green moisture protection.

πŸ“ How Deep Should My Barrier Be?

Typical bamboo rhizomes grow into the first 12" of soil. Rhizomes spread the plant (not roots) β€” so even if the top 12" is the norm, rhizomes can go deeper. Our most common installed depths are 24" and 30".

Certain species in sandy soils can send rhizomes much deeper. For extra safety, we offer barrier depths up to 60" (60 mil only). Consult a certified arborist for your specific bamboo and region.

⚠️
A Note About 40 Mil Barrier

Our 40 mil bamboo barrier is appropriate for standard bamboo containment applications. Many bamboo varieties are adequately contained with the use of rhizome barrier measuring 40 mil in material thickness by 24" in depth. For aggressive bamboo species consider our 60 mil bamboo barrier which provides enhanced puncture resistance and higher overall durability.

Applications

40 mil HDPE rhizome barrier is designed to contain bamboo and other invasive species. The 40 mil thickness is widely recognized as the baseline thickness acceptable in effective bamboo containment.

Bamboo is a fantastic garden plant due to it’s ability to grow quickly and provide privacy as well as aesthetic beauty. When bamboo is left un-contained it can spread throughout a landscape providing a major maintenance issue as well as damage to hardscapes or other delicate plantings.

Our rhizome barrier is composed of heavy-duty HDPE and provides a smooth surface which acts as a very effective root-stop. The bamboo rhizomes (roots) will not penetrate the barrier but instead grow along the side of the barrier instead.

Installation Steps
Step 1: Dig trench
Step 1

Dig the Trench

Dig a trench where you want to plant your bamboo. Remove the topsoil and heavier sub-soil. Avoid tight corners to prevent stress on the barrier material.

Step 2: Prepare site
Step 2

Prepare the Site

Clear the trench of rocks, roots, and debris. A smooth, clean trench wall helps the barrier sit properly and prevents punctures from sharp objects.

Step 3: Choose barrier
Step 3

Choose Your Barrier

Choose the correct bamboo barrier for your application. We recommend 60 mil and thicker barriers for most aggressive bamboo containment applications.

Step 4: Place barrier
Step 4

Place the Barrier

Set the barrier in the trench with the wall extending at least 2 inches above grade. This above-grade exposure is critical to prevent rhizomes from escaping over the top.

Step 5: Overlap and tape
Step 5

Overlap & Tape Seams

Overlap barrier sections by 4 feet and secure with double-sided HDPE seam tape. Place vertical strips within the overlap to ensure no rhizomes can breach the joint.

Step 6: Backfill
Step 6

Backfill the Trench

Backfill with subsoil first, compacting to remove air pockets. Avoid sharp objects (glass, stones, metal, tree roots) when filling. Top with lighter soil and pack firmly.

πŸ”§ Maintenance

Effective bamboo control requires seasonal maintenance. Bamboo rhizomes spread outward from the center plant in spring, summer, or fall depending on your location.

Dig a trench around the planted area, inspect the barrier for any rhizomes that have escaped over the top, and trim them back. Annual inspection keeps containment reliable for the long term.
