HDPE Sheets (rolled) |
Uses of HDPE Sheets:
HDPE (high density polyethylene) sheets have many uses from industrial packaging to landscape related uses. The information below mostly focuses on HDPE as used in the landscape only although our material can be used in a vast variety of other applications as well. Rhizome Barrier Supply provides HDPE sheet material in a rolled form. We have thicknesses available from 20 mil – 100 mil and in standard stocking lengths of 100'. Custom roll lengths are also available in lengths starting at 200' and longer. Custom roll heights are available in sizes ranging from 18” to 48”.
Used to Control Bamboo & Trees:
Bamboo is known as one of the tallest, most beautiful and fastest-growing types of plants in the world. In fact, some of the species of it can even grow up to 35 inches in just 24 hours because of its unique dependent system of rhizome. Moreover, bamboo also has a greater compressive strength as compared to wood, concrete or brick. That is why many people worldwide don’t just use bamboo to add beauty to their garden, but they also use it to serve as a privacy screen along property lines.
However, due to the fact that bamboo rapidly grows and spreads, many bamboo plant owners are having hard time controlling and maintaining the plant to its proper, designated place. A solution to help control the spread of bamboo is to use the sheet material to contain the plant's roots.
When it comes to bamboo barrier that is made up of HDPE sheets, you should make sure that its height of the material at least 18” and has a thickness of 40 mil for effective rhizome control. However, if your bamboo plants are located in a soft soil or steep hillsides, your barrier should be a minimum depth of 30”. It is still advisable that you consult a local expert when it comes to bamboo to ensure that you have chosen the correct hight of barrier for your application.
When installing, you should first dig a trench around the planting area that has a depth of 2” less than the depth of your barrier. This is to allow the material to extend 2” above the finished grade. This is to allow the gardener to spot rhizome roots attempting to “jump” the barrier. After digging the trench, you can now put the bamboo barrier into to the trench and if completely surrounding the planting area, ensure that the two ends of the material overlap a minimum of 4'. Lastly, seal it using a sealant tape for to create a secure connection.
The material can also be used to control tree roots. Tree roots are best controlled with a barrier of at least 60 mil in thickness and a minimum recommended depth for most trees of 24”. It is recommended that if tree roots are to be contained, the material is not placed within 8 feet of the root center as the HDPE material does not include vertical guides which if placed too close to the tree can allow the tree's roots to grow along the surface and create potential instability. If it is necessary to place the material in close proximity to the tree consider tree root barrier which is specificity designed with vertical guides which direct the tree roots downward which stabilizes the tree. Tree root barrier is available in both sheet and panel form. Both materials are effective in controlling the growth of tree roots and preventing damage to valuable hardscapes. Used as Water Barrier:
Another use of HDPE sheets are as a water barrier. Water barriers can protect your landscapes and hardscapes from any possible underground water movement especially when you are watering your plants. Furthermore, when you also use a water barrier around the foundations of your house or building as it will effectively help to prevent plant and tree root intrusion into and under the foundation. Using a water barrier that is made up of HDPE sheet material is ideal especially when your plants or trees are planted on a slanted hillside or in soil that has trouble absorbing water. The installation process for installing water barrier is similar to that of using the material as bamboo barrier.
Other Uses:
HDPE sheet material is a preferred material over other materials due to it's durability and long life span. High-density polyethylene is also a product that is extremely versatile and has excellent properties and outstanding resistance against chemicals, moisture, odor and stain. The material also has a very low friction coefficient and it can also be cut, welded and machined easily. The durability of the high-density polyethylene makes it really ideal for a wide range of applications like the chute linings, water tanks, bottle, production of bottle cap and other types of industrial uses.
The material can also offer a protection against radiation when used to nuclear facility. Furthermore, the tensile strength and rigidity of high-density polyethylene are also higher when compared to materials that have medium and low density. Because of the fact that it is a strong material, its impact strength is lower.
Aside from being one of the best materials for industrial uses, it is also safe to use in food processing industry. In fact, many companies that sell food in bulk rely on HDPE containers to ensure to transport food as many of the compounds area rated for use with food.
HDPE is indeed a very useful and versatile material due to its outstanding properties and excellent strength. Ranging from landscape uses to industrial and even the food processing and transportation industry, HDPE is a material that that is counted in a multitude of applications.
